Romulus Buckle the Engines of War The Chronicles of the Pneumatic Zeppelin Richard Ellis Preston Jr 9781477807682 Books

Romulus Buckle & the Engines of War is an absolute thrill of a ride! Every act is like a roller coaster, climbing up to new heights and soaring through chapters leaving you emotionally charged and wanting more!

The story starts off about a month after Preston's first Romulus Buckle novel, City of the Founders, with the confident and determined Captain Romulus Buckle of the Pneumatic Zeppelin searching for answers. The town of Tehachapi was bombed and many innocents, including Buckle's mother, and possibly sister, were killed. He finds proof that the mysterious and powerful Founders clan were behind the attack, but in order to deliver the news, he must defeat mutant sabertooths, rescue one of his shipmates from the brink of death, and battle an alien kraken, all in the first act no less!

Richard Preston Jr. is a brilliant writer. I love his style. Some authors sprinkle the details into their story and allow you, as the reader, to fill in the gaps with your imagination. Richard paints the whole picture for you, and it's a wonderful work of art, one that allows you to sit back, kick your feet up, and enjoy the story!

My favorite part of the novel was easily the third act where Captain Buckle charges the Pneumatic Zeppelin into an air battle. It was an intense situation that made me sit on the edge of my chair with my heart pounding the entire time. Richard Preston Jr. is one of those authors who can make us care about his characters and what happens to them. The ending left plenty of room open for the next novel, but still had its own satisfying conclusion.

Romulus Buckle & the Engines of War is a fantastic followup to City of the Founders. This is an amazing steampunk series, one that I can't wait to continue with the next Romulus Buckle adventure!

Romulus Buckle the Engines of War The Chronicles of the Pneumatic Zeppelin Richard Ellis Preston Jr 9781477807682 Books Reviews

I loved every page in this book, even though I listened to it on audio. The thrill ride just continues on, relentlessly taking ur breath away on nonstop adventure. The character development is really great, and Romulus is not the only compelling character. I keep finding myself so involved in the Vulcan-like Martian female and the really intriguing relationship between her and Romulus. The political machinations at play thru out keep you guessing. My only complaint in the whole book is that I'm having to wait so long for the sequel!
This is the second Romulus Buckle novel and I found it to be even stronger than the first. The characters seemed more three dimensional and engaging; I cared more about them. The airship battles (steam powered, of course) were thrilling, even though there was never any real doubt that our dashing hero would triumph. Once again the author pulled off the feat too often missed in series the story arc is satisfying, while leaving mysteries to be resolved and the ground well laid for the next installment. Sadly that is not yet available, or I would plunge right into it. Very enjoyable (keep in mind that I am a fan of sci-fi, fantasy, and steampunk; readers who are not enthusiastic about these genres might want to choose a different book).
"Romulus Buckle and the Engines of War" is the second installment of the series, "The Chronicles of the Pneumatic Zeppelin". The first book in the series and this one both fall into the "Steam Punk" genre, which is a sub-genre of science fiction that typically features steam-powered machinery in an alternative history of the 19th century or a post-apocalyptic future during which steam power has regained mainstream use. Both books were perhaps the most enjoyable stories I've read in the last few years and I am anxiously waiting for the third installment for these chronicles do not end with "Engines of War" I purchased the e-books, however, I see both are also available in paperback if you are so inclined.
I have read 2 books in this series and both of them are really exciting. Sometimes it is hard to keep the characters straight but they are very entertaining and there is never a dull moment. Romulus Buckle is the airship captain, he is quite a ladies man and a true swashbuckling (ha) hero. His crew has many beautiful women including Martians and mechanicals. I have already ordered the next book in the series.
Romulus Buckle's life would be any adrenaline junky's dream except his adventures aren't about getting his kicks (that's a by-product). He is moved by loyalty, family and yes, a serious sense of adventure. Richard Ellis Preston Jr.'s second book in the Pneumatic Zeppelin Chronicles, Romulus Buckle & the Engines of War, continues the saga of Romulus through the challenges of facing off against the Founders, this time, with a little help from some new friends.

If you're looking for subtly, don't go hanging out with Romulus Buckle. He's a bit larger than life, his adventures are action-packed and his loyalties are (fairly) straight-forward. Mr. Preston continues his fine, swashbuckling tradition from the first in the series, Romulus Buckle and the City of the Founders. However, the relationships become more complicated and new revelations and hints of revelations put a new twist on things.

The author has a very rich writing style, describing everything in great detail, being a little bit overbearing sometimes. Also, the book has non-stop action from cover to cover. So much so that you start to feel tired halfway through it. For those action freaks, is a must. For the rest, not so much. This is the second book in the series and the description of the steampunk world is certainly superb. In terms of world creation, one of the best I have ever read. It would be good if the author would've let us breath a little between the ludicrous battles that happen one after the other. Once you start thinking "this can't get any worse or more ridiculous dangerous", it get so much worse that you almost certainly will scream "come on, give the guy a break!".
