If you are considering buying this book, you have most likely read The Obsedian Triology, and know that Mercedes Lackey and James Mallory is a winning combination. If you haven’t, I’d recommend that you read that series first, partly because very little in this book will make much sense if you do not, but mainly because this it’s just flat-out good.

That being said, ‘The Phoenix Unchained’ is a very different book from the original triology. The first book of that series, ‘the outstretched shadow’, was pretty much a self-contained story with a clearly defined treath, a well-executed exposition of the world and magic system, and an identifiable climax. In contrast, this book has frequent callbacks to the last series and even the appearance of some of its characters, focusing mainly on laying the groundwork for future volumes. This allows for a much more nuansced, subtle storyline, but also one that is somewhat more slow-paced than the first book. Nevertheless, I recomend it wholeheartedly. The richness of the characters- and the writting- makes this an infinetly enjoyable read.

The Phoenix Unchained Enduring Flame Book 1 Mercedes Lackey James Mallory 9780765315939 Books Reviews

What I love about this world is its all about the journey, not destination. As long I as get the fantastic sense of adventure, traveling and meeting so many fantasy creatures I hardly ever see used in fantasy novels the last battle could be with huge pancake for all I care. The bond between friends, the interesting magic system, was a great read to get my mind off being ill.
This was the next book chosen by one of our book club members. Fantasy has not been my first choice or even second, but I found when I came to the end of this book I would have to order the next two in this Trilogy, because I need to find out what happens in Tiercel's quest to find the woman in the lake of fire. I don't like to be left hanging! So I became intrigued. The next two books are on their way. I am looking forward to reading them.
The original obsidian series was pretty good. This one was weak and derivative of the first. If you read the first series and *really* liked it, you'll probably like this one too.

I hope the third Phoenix book is a bit better when it comes out. I must admit, the last third of the second Phoenix book was starting to get my attention. The first book and first 2/3 of the second book were pretty much relegated to developing the characters and setting up the story. That, too me, is an awful lot of time spent getting up to speed.
This three-part series of books were fun to read but not terribly engaging. I don't believe they are Lackey's best work. I have enjoyed other of her books much more. If you just want to kill some time, have fun with these. Otherwise, I couldn't really recommend them.
I didn't want to buy this book because the story continues 1,000 years after Kellen and Vestakia and Cilarnen. How can a story "continue" a 1,000 years later?
But, silly me, this is Mercedes Lackey we are talking about and when I finally bought the book and then actually opened it two months later (I didn't believe for a minute it would be as good as the Obsidian Trilogy), I was almost immediately sucked into the story.
Wild Magic and Centaurs and Knight Mages, oh my. And Jermayan and Idalia and Ancaladar!! Completely compelling right down to the last sentence when Harrier says, "I thought we were in trouble. But if the Wild Magic is making me a Knight Mage, then we are really in trouble."
And, as usual, I can't wait for the next installment.
The "Obsidian Trilogy" started out with the same story that seems to appear in all of Mercedes Lackey's novels lately. A troubled teenager discovers their destiny, etc. I liked the first two books of the "Obsidian Trilogy" pretty well, and the Demons even invoked a few shivers. The third book fell flat and seemed to be rushed. The Demons were defeated too easily after all the references to how evil and clever they were.

This book starts out with even less to like than the third "Obsidian" book. The plot is too simple and the characters are too shallow. I found myself wondering when something interesting would actually happen.

The writing time would have been better spent on the third "Obsidian" book than this very weak follow on.
Very enjoyable read. I like the Lackey and Mallory team. I enjoyed every book they have written together. The book was a fast read. The elven names and cities are tough to sound out, but the core of the story does not disappoint. BTW I am still waiting for book 2 of The Dragon Prophecies by the two authors.
