It's the last days of Prohibition and the first days of the Depression and East Coast crime bosses are vying for control of Los Angeles. Caught in the middle of the intrigues is Gerry Kells, a former New York enforcer now living a life of ease on the West Coast.

As the fiercely independent Kells rejects the appeals of various crime bosses who want to make use of his talents, powerful forces align against him. Being framed for a murder turns out to be the least of his troubles and as the stakes get higher, and the odds get longer, it's only Kells' nerve and toughness that keep him one step ahead of the law—and the reaper.

Featuring one of the most brutal finales in crime fiction history, this lost 1933 masterpiece took hard-boiled writing as far is it safely could. Some say too far.

Fast One edition by Paul Cain Matthew Louis Martin Kohler Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks

Read this in an afternoon. It moves damn fast and end just as it should. It is a hi-speed ride through the nihilism of the depression without all the frill and optimism of the later noir pulp this just shows the grit and devil-may-care attitudes of a time when life was less than cheap and moved entirely too fast to stay on top of... Loved it.
I may be a little biased as My mother is a genealogy buff and informed me that George Sims (AKA Paul Cain) was her uncle and was just about as hard-boiled in real life as his novel presents life to be. Small world.

Fast One edition by Paul Cain Matthew Louis Martin Kohler Mystery Thriller Suspense eBooks Reviews

Chandler considered this the high point of hardboiled, and he gets no argument from me. I was extremely excited to hear Gutter Books re-issued it -- par for the course for that excellent publishing house. This is noir, as stripped down and vicious as it gets. If you've never read it, too bad for you. If you have, and need a new copy for the collection -- let Gutter invite you back to 30s LA for a guided tour of its darkest corners, one more time.
The availability Of “Fast One” in print and as an inexpensive download calls new attention to Paul Cain’s writing. Cain, reportedly born George Sims, appears to have hidden behind pseudonyms (much as did the Portugese poet, Fernando Pessoa, and perhaps for the same reasons). He wrote for Black Mask as Paul Cain, and wrote movie scripts as Peter Ruric. He created a mystique of sorts, but not of the dimensions of that of B. Traven.

“Fast One” was written as a revision and consolidation into a novel of stories featuring the same main character written for Black Mask in the 1931-1933 period. When it was published, reports are that the New York Times reviled it as a “ceaseless welter of bloodshed and frenzy.” Raymond Chandler is quoted as praising it as the ultimate in hard-boiled crime fiction. It is not populated with likeable people. The main character is a gambler and morphine addict. The book is relentlessly bleak. The writing style is cut-to-the-bone spare. It may be the logical progression from “Red Harvest” toward the outer edges. I don’t know that “enjoyable” in any conventional sense is an appropriate description of “Fast One,” but the book is a very interesting walk through Nightmare Alley, is a landmark in crime fiction, and commands a certain respect.

Cain’s writing style, and the world view expressed in his stories, are polar opposites from those of his contemporaries, S. S. Van Dine, Ellery Queen, and Earl Stanley Gardner. His only other book of which I am aware is “Seven Slayers.” It is a collection of stories he wrote for Black Mask, and is recommended, subject to the obvious caveats.

A certain mental set is needed, I suggest, when books of an earlier time are read. Most present day readers will not have internalized the context of the time in which “Fast One” was written and in any event are not now living under the glower of the Great Depression, and may miss some of the unvoiced assumptions implicit in the writing. Still, these books can be appreciated much as current audiences can appreciate “Casablanca” even though the movie will not have the same impact on them as on those who saw it during the middle of WWII, when the dice were still rolling.

“Fast One” is highly recommended to those who enjoy the hard boiled noir genre. Others may find reading it to be somewhat like accidentally poking their finger into an empty light socket.
Frenetic and hard boiled for sure. Characters are two dimensional. This is all about a fast plot with lots of turns.
Book moves fast with twists and turns. Very few internal thoughts from the hero. Made the book more enjoyable. Two interesting chapters regarding the author included in the book.
