Wow, I hated this book. Second one I've read from this author, I don't even know why I bought it now. The summary on the back doesn't even sound interesting. The book was written well but the story never grabbed me even initially and really drug on from there, jumping back and forth between time and characters. The whole 'group' this book is about is not only immature, childish, and disruptive, their manifesto is pathetic and doesn't even make sense. Honestly I gave up less than 100 pages from the end and read the spoilers which I never do. I gave up on this book when it was suggested that a straight woman, married for ten years, could just find herself in a lesbian experience *just like that* and use crude language about craving it. Being gay doesn't work that way, you don't just flip a switch. This isn't katy perry. Then the plot twist at the end was ridiculous...just a way to make a twist that has nothing to do with the story's buildup up to that point. Therefore, the length of the book and its repetitive nature were nothing more than a waste of time. This book was so bad, I'm giving up on the author and selling both books that I have. Sorry!

As a thriller, this left something to be desired. The ending seemed like the author just wanted to wrap things up in a somewhat plausible manner.

That being said, the backend of this novel - the portrayal of how two people can fall apart. Of how a marriage falls apart. Of how a child interprets that distance between her estranged parents - that was wonderful. I loved how all of those perspectives were explored and how it lent itself to all of the misunderstandings. Very cool.
I've enjoyed a lot of her books, but this was by far my least favorite. The storyline and events were farcical, not to spoil things too much...but there was a person operated talking taxidermy moose at one point, and someone takes off into the night on a jet ski at another point. Stick with her other novels instead.
I've read all of the books by this author, and loved most of them, especially "The Winter People". While this one is suspenseful, it is also repetitive. I kept telling myself if I read the term "babycakes" one more time, I'd stop reading...I was sick of it within the first quarter of the book. Only one likeable character in the book, the rest come off as arrogant, self-centered individuals, even at the expense of a child who was unwillingly born to two of the members of a group of wannabe rebels. Really disappointed in this one given how much I enjoyed her other work.
I read "Winter People" by this author and HAD to find everything else she had published. Ms. McMahon alludes to somethings spiritual, supernatural, other-worldly in a way that makes you wonder, "Could it really be...?" while exploring relationships of friends and family and how profoundly they are driven by the past. Any of Jennifer McMahon's novels are worth your time.
A wonderfully written adventure, just like all of McMahon's stories. The suspense, the hints of supernatural, the dance between past and present, the way she leads the reader to look into the minds of all the characters...all these ingredients make up another complete success. I can't wait to read another one!

I read another book by Jennifer McMahon years ago and I'm not quite sure why I waited so long to read another one. She is amazing. I am in awe of this writer. She is able to create The creepiest scenes. For example the aquarium with the dead and bloated frogs. How macabre can you get? And that is just the beginning. This book was extremely suspenseful and even when I thought I had figured some of it out I quickly learned that I was wrong. I love the juxtaposition of Henry and Tess being these criminals with a huge secret, a terrible secret, but then loving their sweet little daughter so very much. I love the riddle about being in the cement room with no windows and no doors and you have to answer how do you get out. This is what I'm talking about. How does McMahon come up with these things? Is it her poetry background? Is she simply brilliant? I can only hope to be so creative one day. The character development is incredibly strong. I love how Henry is always chewing on the inside of his cheek.I loved Tess's sculpture in the garden of she and Henry were they are part lion and part human. It's just all so disturbing but in a wonderful way. I love Emma's imaginary friend Danner, who even at the end we aren't quite sure if she's real or a hallucination or a ghost. And the twist at the very very end with Amber? I mean, I am simply in awe. And I love how it's not Suzanne or Susan or Susie – just Suz. She's dead throughout the entire book but yet driving everything that is happening. Amazing. Can't wait to read more by McMahon.
This was a very interesting novel. I liked this novel for several different reasons. Dismantled is about innocent teens that made a mistake when they were teens and running in a crowd that was different from the rest of the world. Jennifer wrote this book from the teens perspective and did a great job. When you are reading this novel you feel like you are a teen and then switching back to a adult throughout the novel. This was a very well planned and thought out book. I will definitely be reading more books by her. I like to read teen fiction books because it takes you back to a time when life was simpler and you were trying to figure out where you belong in the world. This book describes the feelings to a tee and has a excellent story line to follow. Warning about this book though is this book tells the story of five different people and jumps around a lot so you have to keep the story line together. I am not sure how anyone could read this book and not feel pleased with the book unless you were forced to read it or did not want to read it to begin with. The story has twists and turns, excitement, mystery, and a great ending. Hope you enjoy it as much as I did. Thanks
