As the title of my review suggested, I neither liked nor hated this book. That's never a good thing: the book should spark emotion but my interest level flatlined along with the paper thin protagonists and rambling plot. The characters were unrealistic, inconsistent, and lacked true emotion and gravitas. The plot lacked focus and went in all directions, rather aimlessly, without a clear path. Events happen purely to make a plot point in a very heavy handed deus ex machina fashion. As such, I feel this would be an ok book for a tween or undemanding reader. But adults may find their enjoyment hampered by the lack of sophistication and depth in the writing.

Plot: Olivia's only concern is whether she will have to marry a repugnant greasy boy or bland best friend Joshua. Luckily for her, it's Joshua. Unluckily for her, on the same day of her wedding she is taking into police custody for no apparent reason. Her mother soon incarcerates herself so she can tell her daughter that she was conceived naturally, not artificially, and that she's the only person left alive who can do so (i.e., she's our unique snowflake). Olivia escapes with Joshua, finds out her father (and his parents) have a hidden past, and that she's just as valuable a commodity on the outside of the city as the inside.

My copy didn't have copious amounts of typos but I have to agree with previous reviewers that there is no excuse for things as simple as a you're/your tupo. But really, it was the inconsistencies in the plot/characters that frustrated me the most. Absolutely no one seemed to feel they were in any danger of their life and yet despite having experienced several life altering and horrific-death experiences, they carry on as normal and pretty much the same as the beginning of the book (e.g., they witness a woman they know burning to death and then being shot - and a few pages later they are flirting and laughing happily). As well, decisions they make, which really should have tipped the Darwin stupidity scale NOT in their favor, serving only so that something can be overhead/discovered (e.g., they steal a secret hidden map that has a city mysteriously appearing only on that version - so they decide to go there! Why? Because it's gotta be safe, right? Right?). Even later, we have people wondering things that were clearly explained earlier - as if the author had forgotten that she put it in or put that info in later and then forgot to edit later parts to reflect that. As well, reactions are odd to each other, their circumstances, and the sudden and abrupt revelations about their family. This just wasn't well thought out - there are so many examples I could give about how nothing makes sense unless the protagonists are dead dumb (yet they can learn archery, to drive, theft, even romance/kissing despite being raised completely vanilla without those things.

The writing lacks characterization and depth. It just moves along, all tell and no show, without any feeling to any of the characters' actions. That makes for a fast, easy, but highly unsatisfying read. I polished this off in an hour and I don't doubt that I will forget most of it as fast. Well, except for the rebels being called the "Rebel Alliance". Really?

Aberrant Volume 1 Ruth Silver 9780991789788 Books Reviews

I think the author knew exactly what her story was and she just somehow assumed we , as readers could read her mind or else she thought she wrote well and explained things in more depth. But, I obviously did not see things that way as I read the book. I felt like the book made really hard assumptions and the reader was supposed to just know things. I also thought the story was choppy, did not flow well and ended in a really super strange way. I do realize the book was more geared toward young adult readers and in fact, that is why I was reading it because I like to be involved in things with my teen daughter and she chose the book we were reading together this time and this is the book she chose based on what it said it was about on the page. I agreed, that it sounded good so we began to read it. I ended up at about 40% of the book and could barely force myself to continue reading and at that time I asked my daughter what part she was on and she said , "Oh , I lost interest in that book right away! it really doesn't seem very good." I also have to say here that my daughter is a huge reader and she generally reads a book a day and she had just moved on from this book because she did not like it. However, since I insisted she finish it up because I was already reading it, she said she would and as of this moment she is still dragging along trying to finish the book and it is simply because of the choppiness and inconsistencies in the story that neither of us really like the book. I do think that the overall story would have been great if it was perhaps by a different person writing it or something because it COULD be good, I just don't think it really was good though. (Also, I like the name of the book but I think having it only one small place inside the book and it not even being in a prominent place makes it seem weird to have the entire book named that. ) And one other note= my daughter is 13 and the subject matter was not entirely inappropriate but I was quite aware of sexual situations and inuendos and things like that and maybe I was a little sensitive to it since I was aware at the same time that my little girl was reading these things so I am not sure if I would say it was okay for a teen to read it or not but overall it was not explicit in any way and I suppose I am okay with her reading the subject matter.
I really enjoyed the prequel to this series, and I wasn't disappointed with this book! I really loved the idea the author came up with and thought it leaned a little toward New Adult romance. Still set in the same dystopian, sci-fi world Olivia's story is one that is heartbreaking and thrilling. I found the book to be fast paced and action packed. It's also a clean romantic read. I look forward to reading book 2!

Love Forbidden is the first book in the Aberrant series.
